BIO 662: Ethical Issues in Human Genetics and Genomics
This course addresses different types of ethical issues in the context of research in genetics and genomics. We will discuss different case studies that illustrate moral problems and dilemmas that researchers in this field may encounter. Moreover, we will talk about social impacts and consequences of research in genetic and genomics. We will particularly focus on ethical issues raised by these developments and the role and responsibility of scientists in these discourses. To prepare these practical
discussions of ethical issues, the course also provides a general introduction to some central ethical theories and concepts.

On successful completion of the course, you should:
- be familiar with some basic ethical theories and concepts
- be able to recognize ethical issues in societal debates
- be sensitized for ethical issues in everyday scientific work
- be aware of societal implications of research in genetics and genomics
- understand moral concerns raised by research in genetic and genomics.
- be aware of the particular role as a scientist and expert in society
