Self-organization during a PhD

Why this workshop?
One size does not fit all! Struggles with time-management and selforganization are highly individual and so are the solutions needed. Problems vary from procrastination and the lack of structure in the self-organization to difficulties to manage external expectations or getting support from the outside. Especially during the research time, PhD candidates often depend on those outside circumstances like measurement time or other kinds of input from other people.

Allgemeine Informationen

Dauer 4 half days
In this workshop you will get to know multiple different methods for timemanagement. You’ll learn how self-organization can also be a question of setting boundaries and how to positively influence your dependencies on other people. Be prepared for being engaged in the discussion and to share your personal experiences with the other participants as the aim is to develop the content together in a guided manner. Struggles with time-management and self-organization are often not talked about, but overall, often very similar for other people.

In order to obtain a more targeted self-organization, we will discuss goal setting principles related to different timescales as well as the prioritization of tasks and how to keep the overview in times of a high workload. Furthermore, we will work out individual reasons for procrastination and how to get started on things.

The course includes both theoretical knowledge of various methods and
techniques and you will be practically challenged to apply the different
approaches to your own goals and to-do lists. This way, you will learn to match the methods with your personal challenges without becoming overwhelmed by your workload and thus increase your productivity. In the sessions we will have open discussions about everything concerned with the topic and develop strategies based on the participants personal experiences.

As many tasks during the PhD are requirements from the PhD-program or
expectations from the boss/supervisor, self-organization with respect to the plans of other people plays an important role. This contains delegation of tasks, the setting of boundaries, expectation management and successful management of the legwork of other people.
Additionally, we will discuss with the group the importance of decision-making abilities, appropriate ways of self-criticism and what role self-confidence plays in our personal time-management.
